After 3 years at the National Film School I entered the real world in the throws of a full recession. Unable to find work in the film industry and so I worked on projects falling back on my art school training and spent time building fibreglass models of St. Paul's Cathedral and Windsor Castle for a newly formed design company that was contracted to produce scaled buildings for a park. One day someone mentioned that a company wanted a scenic artist to paint large front of house scenes for a horror show at Blackpool. I gathered my most recent paintings and especially my prized copy of Da Vinci's 'Madonna of the Rocks' (my version was 3 seconds later - as if Da Vinci had told the sitters to relax and I captured that moment in time). So, there I arrived and proudly showed the owner of the company Keith Sparks my creation, he pondered for about 10 seconds, looked up and said " I like your rendering of the rocks.... we have a grotto to make and I think you'll be good for that"!!! I must have spent about 3 years working for Keith and it was an enjoyable experience, he was a larger than life character and I had a great time coming up with ghoulish designs that had to be comical in nature and pull in the punters. Eventually I did find work on my first entrance into the real film industry and worked on the TV series 'Space 1999' for Brian Johnson who gave me my first job and I'm still thankful for that. |
